Best team on a small stage
The first Saturday of December is a big day for local High School football fans as they get to see the best of the best in the state square of in their respective Super Bowls at Gillette Stadium. Unfortunately, this year the state’s best team will not be playing at Gillette, but at Bentley College.
Everett, a team that is the consensus top program in Massachusetts over the last decade and the consensus top team in the state this season, was inexplicably dropped to Division 1A along with the rest of the Greater Boston League.
It’s a shame that fans tuning into the games on television or taking the trip to Gillette will not get the chance to see the states best. Instead the marquee matchup at Gillette Saturday is the Division 1 title game between Boston College High School and Needham. Neither team is unbeaten like Everett and BC High played Everett earlier in the year losing by three touchdowns.
All Divisions ending in “A” will play their respective Super Bowls elsewhere because Central and Western Mass. Super Bowls are now being played at Gillette.
Involving the Central and Western Mass teams is fine, but people want to watch the best team’s play at Gillette and that’s the team’s in the top four divisions. It may not be a fair system but fans will get the most bang for their buck if they only put the bigger schools on the biggest stage. The attendance figures will be greater too and isn’t that the MIAA’s top priority in all of this?
2011 Colts = 2007 Celtics?
It’s pretty clear the Indianapolis Colts have something not to play for this season. At 0-11 the Colts are in prime position to draft Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the No. 1 pick of the draft, the best quarterback prospect since Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.
Indianapolis clearly has talent on the team such as Reggie Wayne, Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis, but they want that No. 1 pick similar to the 2007 Celtics and their game, or lack of game for that matter, shows it.
In 2007 Boston shamelessly tanked the second half of the year to put itself in position to draft Greg Oden or Kevin Durant only to end up with the fifth pick. The 2011 Colts and the 2007 Celtics are looking very similar right now, lets hope the Colts don’t have the follow-up season that the 07 Celtics have.
Big Collegiate Weekend
This weekend is jam packed with stellar college sports matchups. Of course the SEC, Big 12, Big 10, Pac 12 and ACC titles are on the line, but the biggest game of the weekend may be on the hardwood.
Top ranked Kentucky hosts fifth ranked North Carolina in a huge matchup where future NBA stars are at a premium for both squads.
The college football matchups are great, but when you know what the BCS computer is going to pick Sunday night the game’s lose a lot of their meaning.
