CONVERSATION WITH THE NEW YORKER FICTION EDITOR AND AUTHORS at Wellesley College, 106 Central St., Wellesley, on Dec. 8, 6:30 p.m., in Collins Cinema. Deborah Treisman, fiction editor for the New Yorker, will discuss her work with two of her writers, the Bosnian-American novelist and MacArthur fellow Aleksandar Hemon, and New Yorker staff writer and recently named Wellesley College Newhouse Visiting Professor of Creative Writing Hilton Als. FUNDRAISER BENEFITS VENTURING OUT at Sorenson Theater at Babson College, 231 Forest St., Wellesley, on Dec. 8, 7 p.m. $15 – $150. “From Offender to Entrepreneur” will benefit Venturing Out, a nonprofit that teaches entrepreneurship to incarcerated men and women who want to create their own businesses after their release. The play “The Castle,” written by and originally performed by four ex-offenders, will be performed, followed by a panel discussion called “Working Together to Achieve Economic Independence.” Ticket prices range from $15 for students to $150 for patron-level premium seating and a pre-show reception. Sunday, Dec. 11

PARISH CHRISTMAS CONCERT at St. John the Evangelist Church, 9 Glen Road, Wellesley, on Dec. 11, 2 p.m. The program will feature both contemporary and traditional Christmas music performed by the Youth Choir, Contemporary Ensemble, Adult Choir and family Mass musicians of the parish, as well as children’s choirs from St. John School. WELLESLEY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PRESENTS HOLIDAY POPS at MassBay Community College, 50 Oakland St., Wellesley Hills, on Dec. 11, 3 p.m. $25. “Sleigh Rides Around the World” will feature sleigh rides by local composers; sopranos Emily Browder Melville and Leslie Holmes; Hanna Bielawa, winner of the WSO “All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth” contest; a sing-along; and a visit from Santa. PRESIDENT OF BABSON TO SPEAK ON ECONOMIC CRISIS at Wellesley Free Library, 530 Washington St., Wellesley, on Dec. 14, 7 p.m. Len Schlesinger, president of Babson College, will address the economic crisis in a speech titled “Just Start: A Method for Making Decisions in an Unpredictable World.” Refreshments will be served at 7 p.m., and the talk will be at 7:30 p.m. The event is presented by Wellesley Free Library Centennial Fund, as a celebration of the creation of the John Wilkins Fund, an endowed book fund for economics, business and investments.
