Roslindale is one of four communities in the spotlight this month for a new literary series and writing competition sponsored by WBUR’s Radio Boston and The Drum Literary Magazine called “Zip Code Stories.”
Four zip codes are chosen each month and anyone can submit an original 500-word short story or essay about that area for consideration. Writers do not need to live in the town they are writing about and the stories can be fiction or non-fiction.
In this third round in the series, Roslindale (02131), as well as Gloucester (01930), Brockton (02301) and Wellesley (02482) are the featured towns.
“We hope that breaking down the region by zip code will give people a chance to experience a unique perspective and deeper look into various towns, neighborhoods and villages that make up Greater Boston,” said Mark Navin, the executive producer of Radio Boston.
One winner from each town category gets their piece featured on WBUR’s website and on The Drum’s website. In addition, one of the four winning pieces is also featured on the air during Radio Boston. The author is invited in to the radio station to read an excerpt and tell the story behind their story.
Last month, aspiring scribes were asked to submit stories highlighting Somerville, Lowell, Salem and Framingham for the series’ second round. Liz Moore, writing about Framingham, won for her story, “The Start of Something.”
The deadline for submissions for this round is January 9. To learn more and how to submit your original piece, visit wbur.org/zipcode.
