The U.S. Postal Service has announced a new date for a public meeting to discuss the possible closure of the Northwest-Boston Processing and Distribution Facility, which is on Smith Street in Waltham.
The meeting, which was originally scheduled for Dec. 29, was moved to Jan. 10, 2012, from 6-8 p.m. at Waltham High School.
“Postal Officials from the Greater Boston Postal District will be in attendance to make a presentation and field comments and questions,” a release states.
The Postal Service recently did a feasibility study on the possible shuttering of the facility, which is one of 252 processing centers being eyed for closure, according to the release. The Greater Boston District Office has completed a review of that study and sent it to the Northeast Area Office, the release states.
The Jan. 10 meeting is aimed at explaining the study and plan to close the facility, which employs 401 workers. Postal Service spokesman Dennis Tarmey told the News Tribune earlier this month that the service has a “no-layoff” provision in certain employee contracts, meaning those 401 employees would likely be reassigned to other positions within the Postal Service if the Smith Street facility is closed.
The Postal Service will also accept mailed comments regarding the plan to close the facility for up to 15 days after the Jan. 10 meeting. Those comments can be mailed to: Consumer Industry Contact Manager, Greater Boston District, 25 Dorchester Ave., Boston, MA 02205-9631.
