The Ivy League, the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame also recognized Schwieger as the runner-up for the Asa S. Bushnell Cup Ivy League Player of the Year. Harvard University senior defensive lineman Josue Ortiz and University of Pennsylvania senior linebacker Erik Rask were also nominated for the award, while Cornell University sophomore Jeff Matthews was named the winner. All of the nominees were named to the first-team All-Ivy squad, an honor that Schwieger has received his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. Last season, Schwieger was named co-winner of the Bushnell Cup after rushing for 1,133 yards.
The Associated Press recognized Schwieger’s stellar season by naming him a member of the Football Championship Subdivision All-America Third Team. Schwieger is Dartmouth’s first player to make the team in nine years and the 63rd member of the Big Green to be selected as an All-American in 72 seasons.
In light of his college success, Schwieger is preparing for a professional football career and recently signed a deal with an agency in Manchester, N.H.
The senior from Massachusetts finished his career with a league-leading 1,310 yards on the ground this season, a mark that ranks second in Dartmouth history and 20th all-time across the Ivy League. Schwieger leaves the College as the leading rusher in Dartmouth history.
Schwieger totaled 3,150 rushing yards over the course of his career, catapulting him to the top of the Dartmouth Football record board by almost 900 yards and placing him 12th in Ivy League history.
He notched another school record with a career total of 4,115 all-purpose yards. Schwieger was selected as Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week a total of five times in his career at Dartmouth.
This year, he became only the fifth Ivy League player in history to put up at least 100 yards in every game of a season and tied for sixth all-time in the Ancient Eight with 16 career games of 100 or more yards.
Schwieger also turned in big performances in important games, rushing for a school-record 257 yards against Cornell to propel the Big Green to its first of three consecutive wins, its first three-game winning streak in eight years.
This season, Schwieger has scored at least one touchdown in seven of the Big Green’s ten games and tallied a career-high three touchdowns in a 37-0 shutout over Columbia. He totaled 10 touchdowns this season.
Schwieger said his most rewarding performance this year came against Brown, in which he ran for 137 yards and the game-winning touchdown for a 21-16 road win.
“Really what happened at the end of the year was that we beat Brown on the road, and I think that really helped us cement the 4-3 record,” Schwieger said.
The Big Green’s last three games of the season, all victories, were a testament to the strength of the team and his senior classmates, Schwieger said.
