Regatta organizers are calling Richardson’s victory on Friday one of the greatest comebacks in the five-day regatta’s 25-year history.
Richardson and his crew did not finish Monday’s second race after a crewmember fell overboard. The DNF normally proves fatal, but Richardson’s team kept plugging away and won three of the final five races to pull out a one-point victory over Enfant Terrible, skippered by Italian sailor Rossi Alberto.
John Kilroy of Los Angeles and his Samba Pa Ti team captured the Melges 32 class, the largest of the 112-boat fleet.
Rán, representing Great Britain and owned by Skype co-founder Niklas Zennstrom, won all 10 races to easily capture the Mini Maxi class. Doug DeVos of Grand Rapids, Mich., and his Quantum Racing team won the 52 Class.
