Mustangs riding high in Bay State

Norwood did its best to take control of the Bay State Conference early in its battle of division leaders against Needham.

Dan Wiseman and Mike Murray scored 22 seconds apart in the first period and the Mustangs never were caught in a 4-3 victory Wednesday night. The Mustangs (10-2-4 overall) are the lone unbeaten team left in the BSC.

Brendan Cathcart and Mark Powers added goals for Norwood, which was able to hold on after the Rockets pulled within a goal with 12.4 seconds to play.

Elsewhere in the BSC, David Fasano and Tom Mahoney scored and Braintree (10-2-2) locked up a playoff spot by edging Natick, 2-1. … Ian Crowley scored twice, including the game-winner with 1:57 to play, and Brookline picked up its first league victory, edging Dedham, 3-2. Jack Buckley also scored for the Warriors (3-14-0). … Brendan Kelly and Will Russo scored twice each and Milton (10-3-1) rolled to an 8-3 win against Weymouth. … Jack Maxwell made 17 saves and Wellesley blanked Newton North, 4-0. Ryan Cassidy scored twice and added an assist for the Raiders (7-7-2).

Everett clinched a postseason berth for the first time since 2003 as the Crimson Tide clipped Cambridge, 3-1, in the Greater Boston League to improve to 10-3-1 overall. James Liberge notched the go-ahead goal for Everett.

Brett Romkey and Trevor Cimino each had hat tricks and Burlington (10-1-2) crunched Belmont, 10-2, in the Middlesex League to qualify for the postseason. … Kevin Doherty scored three times and added an assist, and Wakefield (7-4-3) battled to a 5-5 draw with Woburn (9-3-2). … James Parrish (goal, three assists) and Henrik Nilsson (two goals, assist) tapped Lexington (6-8-0) to a 4-0 sweep of Stoneham. … Brian Pickett’s game-winner pushed Wilmington past Winchester, 2-1.

Durham Ghelfi’s goal with 3:11 left pulled Falmouth into a 1-1 tie with Bridgewater-Raynham and sealed up a postseason bid for the Clippers (9-2-4). … In another nonleague clincher, Mario Pizzeri (17 saves) locked up his first career shutout and punched a postseason ticket for St. John’s (Shrewsbury) with a 4-0 conquest of Arlington Catholic. Mike Brown scored twice to lead the Pioneers (10-4-2).

Taylor Nickerson scored with four seconds left, capping off a three-goal comeback to put Mashpee/Upper Cape (9-4-2) in the postseason with a 3-3 tie against Abington in the South Shore League. … Kevin Sheehan and John Mulready scored for Rockland (8-5-1), which battled Cohasset to a 2-2 tie. Brian Evans’ two goals accounted for the offense for the Skippers (9-3-2). … James Daley had two goals and Norwell (12-1-0) ran its win streak to a dozen games by cruising past Harwich/Chatham, 8-4.

Shane Starrett made 23 saves and Catholic Memorial used a five-goal second period to take down Xaverian, 5-1, in the Catholic Conference. The Knights (6-6-0) had five different scorers, getting a pair of shorthanded goals on the same penalty and adding a pair of power-play strikes.

Bobby Mullins had a goal and two assists, Jordan Manthorn added a goal and assist, and St. Mary’s (13-1-2) took command of the Catholic Central Div. 1 race by skating away from Austin Prep, 4-1. … Ryan Dunn’s goal and five assists sparked Archbishop Williams (5-6-1) in its 9-1 rout of Matignon. … St. Bernard’s took care of St. Clement, 8-0, in Div. 2 play as Chris David and Gage Duteau had two goals and two assists apiece. In the Northeastern Conference, Connor Irving finished with a hat trick and assisted on one to slide Beverly (8-5-1) to a 5-1 besting of Revere. Franklin made a big statement in the Hockomock League, routing North Attleboro, 10-0, while denying the Red Rocketeers a chance to clinch a playoff spot. Conor Hanley’s goal 10 seconds into the game got Bourne off and running for a 4-0 whitewash of Old Rochester/Fairhaven in a showdown for first place in the South Coast Conference. Will Humfryes, Spencer Andrews and Beau Laflamme also scored for the Canalmen (8-3-1) and Josh Eddy came up big with 32 saves.

Kaleigh Finigan notched a hat trick and assisted on both goals by Alison Butler as St. Mary’s handed Arlington Catholic its first loss, 5-2, in a Catholic Central League showdown. Butler also assisted on each of Finigan’s goals for the Spartans (11-3-0, 4-0-0). AC dropped to 14-1-1, 3-1-0.

Colleen Doucette scored a pair of goals and Wakefield (6-5-1) surprised Woburn, 3-2, in a Middlesex League crossover. … Erin O’Donovan notched a hat trick and Belmont (12-2-0) rolled to an 8-4 win against Burlington. … Alaina Ewing notched two goals in Winchester’s 6-1 win over Wilmington.

Hingham snapped out of a rare two-game skid with a decisive 9-2 romp over Canton. Catherine Linehan and Sarah Schwenzfeier scored twice each for the Harborwomen (8-4-1), who also got a goal and four assists from Jane Freda, as well as three assists from Alexandria Gong.

Kelly Healey’s goal on a 4-on-3 power play with five minutes left boosted Westwood (9-2-1) to a 5-4 win against Scituate in the Southeastern Mass. League. … Amy Wilson and Rachel Moore scored as Falmouth (8-4-1) blanked Sandwich, 2-0, behind Maddie Scavotto’s 35 saves.

In Girls Eastern Mass. League action, Jennifer White and Samantha Lopilato each netted and assisted a pair to slide Medford (4-10-0) to a 4-1 besting of Cambridge/Somerville. … Rachel Valletti had two goals and an assist, and Masconomet (6-6-3) took down Auburn, 5-2.
