The dollar value of all Greater Boston commercial construction activity in January fell by more than $100 million compared to the same period last year, according to the McGraw-Hill Cos.
But residential construction in the Greater Boston area – which McGraw-Hill identifies as one- and two-family homes and apartment buildings – jumped 71 percent to $ 139.4 million in January from $81.7 million during the same period last year.
McGraw-Hill defines the metro area of Boston-Cambridge-Quincy as Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, Plymouth and Suffolk Counties in Massachusetts, and Rockingham and Stratford Counties in New Hampshire.
Statewide, commercial construction activity in January dropped more than $59 million to $567.6 million this January from $627.3 million last year. Residential construction in January surged to $173 million from $108 million last January.
