Like many locals, restaurateur Barbara Lynch remembers the South Boston Waterfront as a collection of old industrial buildings and not much else. But she, like others, saw its potential even back then.

“I always loved the area,” she said. “Being a Bostonian, it was always one of those industrial areas that wasn’t in great use for a long time, and it’s one part of the city that had such an expansion potential. I thought, ‘This is where the city is going to grow.’ ”
