They say that laughter is the best medicine – and the folks behind the Greater Boston Comedy Relay are counting on that as they kick off their 2012 season with a very special open-mic comedy contest on April 11 at Tavern at the End of the World in Charlestown, MA.
Since 2009, the Greater Boston Comedy Relay has held its annual series of live comedy shows which have raised funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life program in New England. Partnering with well-established venues such as Nick’s Comedy Stop, Dick’s Beantown Comedy Vault, and Mottley’s Comedy Club, the GBCR has included over thirty of the best comedians from Boston and beyond in its effort to raise money through its springtime events, all of whom have consistently donated their time year after year for the cause.
On April 11, the Greater Boston Comedy Relay takes over the Tavern’s weekly show, Laughter at the End of the World, as fifteen local up-and-coming comedians take the stage in an all-out comedic battle for votes. Audience members can donate $1 per vote for their favorite comedian – and be sure to bring lots of cash, because ballot-stuffing is definitely encouraged. All of the proceeds from voting will go directly to Relay For Life, so while it may not be entirely sporstman-like, it’s all in the name of good fun and charity. To make the competition even more tense, the winner of the open-mic contest will win a coveted feature spot at Nick’s Comedy Stop on August 3 4, opening for headliner Orlando Baxter.
While the contest is technically an open-mic contest, the competing comedians were pre-selected on a first-come, first-served registration basis. Competing for your laughs and cash are: Michael Casey, Niraj Shah, Russ Huston, Erik Levi, Brian Beaudoin, Kevin Hall, Tom Niblock, Phoebe Angle, Matthew Duffy, Craig Martin, Rob Greene, Jim Young, Josh Seiden, Ian Rich and John Baglio.
Who will win the crowd over with their humor and charm? Who will go on to perform at Nick’s Comedy Stop later this summer? You’ll have to come out on April 11 to find out!
