The Film
This edition of Baseball’s Greatest Games specifically covers Game 6 of the 2011 World Series between The St. Louis Cardinals and The Texas Rangers. Before we begin, I’m going to give a bit of background on where my interest with baseball lies. Hailing from the greater Boston area, I don’t really need to talk about the Boston Red Sox. Everyone knows the legendary tales (The Curse of the Great Bambino), the improbable title win in 2004 (and in 2007), the collapse this past year and numerous other tales. Baseball, for myself, has not always been the favorite past time it is for some. Basketball (and more Hockey/Football) hold my interest, while baseball (for the most part outside of whether or not the Red Sox are doing well) just doesn’t intrigue me. Yes, I’ll throw the game on here and there, but baseball just takes a high level of commitment that other sports just don’t (time wise with each game running well over 3+ hrs in length). With my interest in other sports, I will admit that I always follow the World Series games, regardless of teams involved, as it’s always exciting to see where the respective teams have come from. Such is the case with the most recent games, between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Texas Rangers.
For those who followed the 2011 World Series, we all know the St. Louis Cardinals were not favored to win the ring. The Texas Rangers, up 3-2 going into Game 6, were projected to be the winner especially after winning the AL Championship for the second year running. The Cardinals, in a seemingly shocking finish, had a few tricks up their sleeves thanks in part to David Freese’s now legendary walk-off home run in the 11th inning. It was this moment that gave the Cardinals the momentum they needed, the momentum to eventually win the 2011 World Series. All the action, excitement and thrills of this Game 6 are captured in this Blu-ray from AE Home Entertainment.
Video Quality
The 1:78:1 framed, AVC MPEG-4 encoded transfer is a solid improvement over the TV broadcast. The game’s color palette features mostly brighter colors, all of which have solid detail. Contrast levels are accurate, for the most part. Some of the player’s flesh tones can look a bit over saturated. This wasn’t a huge issue, but more something I happened to notice. The wider shots do showcase a true sense of the scope of being in the stadium that historic night. All in all, this is a fine port from the TV showing.
Audio Quality
The film’s provided DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is quite good. In particular, the atmosphere of the mix makes you feel like you sitting right in the park that night. Audiences cheers, jeers, smashes of the bats, running of the players. Everything is well placed between the front (dialogue) and the rears (discrete effects). LFE is somewhat absent outside of FOX’s musical cues. Outside of that, this is a fine effort by AE, one that makes you remember that night vividly.
Supplemental Materials
The included supplements are presented in HD:
- Radio Broadcasts – We’re given three different radio broadcast options, one for each team as well as a Spanish language option. Basically, these are play-by-play tracks that inform the audience exactly what is occurring. I wasn’t too enthralled by these, but I’d imagine the older viewers may recall the day when listening to baseball was the only option outside of attending the game.

Overall:
For fans of baseball in general, or either team involved, AE Home Entertainment has faithfully re-captured all the excitement of this now legendary Game 6 of the 2011 World Series. Recommended.
