As Fenway Park celebrates its 100th anniversary and the Red Sox look ahead to a new season, one Boston museum is looking back on the history of the baseball and local African American teams.
The Museum of African American History on Beacon Hill’s Joy Street is displaying a new exhibit titled the “The Color of Baseball” set to open this month.
The exhibit focuses on the history of black teams, the players, and the sports community during baseball’s early years. On display will be photographs and equipment of the day, including the shoes socks, bags, and uniform of pitcher Will “Cannonball” Jackman, who began playing for the Greater Boston Colored League’s Boston Colored Giants in 1924.
The new exhibit kicks off with a family day on Saturday, April 28, at the museum. Members of the museum will be able to see the exhibit on Thursday, April 26, when Bill Littlefield of National Public Radio’s Only a Game hosts an opening program.
