Malden High girls’ lacrosse looks to improve under new coach

The following was submitted by Malden High publicity director Paul Famiglietti:

Caitlyn Germain has taken over the Malden High School girls’ lacrosse head coaching position this year and is very optimistic about the upcoming 2012 season.

“Our team, comprised of seven seniors and 10 juniors, is looking to build off of last year,” commented Germain.

After a disappointing start, losing 15-4 to Bedford High School in Bedford, Malden rebounded with its first win of the season, defeating Greater Boston League rival Cambridge Rindge Latin, 14-9.

Juniors Catherine Poirier (five goals), Danielle Aguinaldo (three goals), and Maria Gil (two goals) have proven themselves as scoring threats at attack. “The three girls have displayed confidence on the field and have proven to be key complements to juniors Amanda Ramsey and Anita Caceda,” said Germain. Caceda is currently the team’s leading scorer with six goals.

“At midfield we have a strong core led by senior captain Stacey Sousa [two goals]. Stacey is supported by senior attacking midfielders Maggie Surette and Brittany Powers and junior midfielders Joyce Ly and Sharon Lee. The backbone of the teams’ defense comes from senior captain Commie Ayuk.”

Ayuk led the team with six groundballs against Bedford and anchored the defense during the win against Cambridge. She gets support from returning senior defenders Carolyn Lam and Tina Pham. Junior defender Navjyot Bola has also stepped up, playing solid defense in both contests.

Alternating between defense and midfield is junior Stevie Klein and senior Malorie MacDonald. While both players have been consistent in transitional play and on the defensive end of the ball, both have also proven to be scoring threats after each scoring impressive goals against Cambridge.

In the cage is returning junior goalie Christina Ascolillo. She is a key element on the field, blocking shots and organizing the backfield for the Tornadoes. Ascolillo has made five saves in both the loss against Bedford and the win against Cambridge.

The Golden Tornadoes are anticipating their next league game against Medford at Pine Banks Park on Wednesday, April 11 at 3:45 p.m.

Junior Varsity girls’ lacrosse

After losing its season opener against Bedford, the junior varsity team rebounded by defeating Cambridge, 11-0.

Scoring for Malden was sophomore Winnie Chen with three goals, junior Fricya Silva, sophomores Elizabeth Tran and Monica Joseph each with two goals, and junior Lynn Nguyen and sophomore Anh Dam each with one goal.

Senior Anabette D’Entremont got the shut out in the net for the Tornadoes.

Coach Susan Famiglietti was very pleased with the girls’ performance. “We have nine new players added to the team this year, two of those players came to us with lacrosse experience and the others are learning how to play the game for the first time,” she said.

“It is great to have our veteran players out there to give our new players some guidance out on the field. Freshmen Brianna Duffy, Joyti Rai, and Gabriella Silva did a great job on defense led by veteran player sophomore Gina Discipio. Other newcomers to the team that are fine additions are freshmen Julia Vanella, Viki Chen, and junior Kezya Costa. Everyone has been working very hard at building their stick skills and playing as a team out on the field. We are very fortunate to have our returning goalie, Anabette D’Entremont. She has the experience and does a great job directing the defense during the game.”
