Sovereign Bank

, owned by Spanish banking giant Santander, sees “widespread” increased demand from Massachusetts clients looking to expand internationally, says Santander’s managing director Ed Morata.

“From very low demand 24 months ago, it’s now a continual process every other day or every other week of another client asking” how to increase business abroad, Morata told the Boston Business Journal. “Businesses are feeling more confident in expanding. People that are in the initial stages, testing the waters, and setting up subsidiaries. Bankers are looking at things, setting up accounts, and opening for business.”

Sovereign is holding a “Global Opportunities Forum” today in conjunction with the Massachusetts Office of International Trade and Investment to introduce area businesses to Santander banking representatives, who will talk about how to expand abroad and create jobs. The event, held at the Mandarin Oriental, will feature Jonathan Kraft, president of the Kraft Group, who owns the New England Patriots

and Gov. Deval Patrick, as well as Santander Holdings USA CEO Jorge Morán. It will be moderated by Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce President Paul Guzzi.
