Man arrested after cemetery break-in
Redding police said they arrested a 40-year-old man early Monday after responding to an alarm at the Redding Cemetery.
Officers responded to the cemetery at 1201 Continental St. at about 4:15 a.m. and heard noise coming from inside a maintenance building on the north end of the property, Redding police Sgt. Pete Brindley said. A man ran from the building after officers announced their presence.
Police learned the man likely pried open the door to the building, but left without taking anything, Brindley said.
Officers used a police dog to search the area but didn’t find the man until he was spotted near Market Street and Eureka Way. Police chased the man north to Hinkle’s Market before catching him, Brindley said.
The man, Lester William Hoffman of Redding, was arrested on suspicion of prowling, burglary and resisting arrest.

Morton was being held at Tehama County Jail on $15,000 bail.
$32,000 heist in Tehama County
Tehama County deputies are looking for whoever broke into a Paskenta-area home and stole more than $30,000 in property.
John Kolthoff, 46, told deputies someone broke into his house between Feb. 20 and Sunday and took a Ford pickup, generator, computer, TV, space heater, guitar, tennis bracelet and other items. Kolthoff wasn’t home during that near two-month stretch, he told deputies.
The stolen items have a combined value of about $32,000, deputies said. The truck, bracelet, generator and guitar were the most expensive items, each worth thousands, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies over the weekend also reported three other burglaries:

Pablo Galvan, 44, of Los Molinos reported a break-in to his storage containers sometime between April 5 and Sunday. The thieves took hand tools, cameras, a TV and a weed trimmer, worth nearly $2,500 total.
James Ward, 51, of Red Bluff said someone broke into a tool shed Friday on his Oklahoma Avenue property and took a generator and chain saw, worth nearly $2,200.
Deputies are asking anyone with information on any of the burglaries to call 529-7900.
