Westwood hangs a loss on Winchester

If there was a team poised to put an end to Winchester’s undefeated girls lacrosse season, it was Westwood.

The Wolverines did just that, recording a 17-9 nonleague win at Knowlton Stadium in Winchester yesterday.

Sophomore midfielder Ela Hazar and senior mid Kate Rich led the Wolverines (10-1) with five goals apiece. But it was senior co-captain Laura McHoul who made Westwood’s offense tick, scoring two goals and recording seven assists while mainly patrolling the area behind the Winchester goal.

Westwood goalie Mollie Brown made nine tough saves, including five stops on free-position shots.

“Winchester (10-1) is an amazing team,” Westwood coach Leslie Frank said. “I think we’re lucky that we jumped out to a few-goal lead because they were forcing us into some errors with their intensity.”

Boys lacrosse

Medford (11-2) clinched the Greater Boston League crown with a 15-8 victory over Malden. Dan Bozovic led the Mustangs with four goals and four assists.

Baseball

Jeff Dunn went the distance, striking out six, and also drove in the lone run as Bellingham (9-1) edged Norton, 1-0, in the Tri-Valley League. …

In the Boston City League, Manny Garcia struck out 11 and David Mercado had two RBI as Madison Park handled Boston English, 5-2.
