Project Bread’s 2012 Walk for Hunger is just a couple of days away, and those heading through Greater Boston could hit a bit of traffic while they’re out and about on Sunday.
Sunday’s walk is a 20-mile route that passes through Boston, Brookline, Newton, Watertown and Cambridge. More than 40,000 people will participate in the event, which kicks off at 9 a.m. on Boston Common.
The MBTA provides free rides to anyone traveling with a walk guide or online registration certificate between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. Sunday. To see schedules and parking information, visit the MBTA website.

The following are road closures and traffic advisories for Newton during Sunday’s Walk for Hunger:
- Expect traffic delays and diversions on Beacon Street from Chestnut Hill Avenue to Newton Centre from 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.
- Langley Road between Beacon Street and Centre Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. Expect traffic delays and diversions at intersecting streets.
- Expect traffic delays and diversions on Centre Street from Langley Road to Newton Corner, from 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. Traffic will be diverted at most intersecting streets.
- Drivers are asked to use extreme caution at Newton Corner from 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. as Walkers will be crossing from Centre Street over the Washington Street Bridge to continue along Centre Street.
- Exit 17 from I-90 westbound will be closed from 10 a.m. until the heavy flow of walkers subsides (likely around 2 p.m.). It is recommended to use Exit 20 for all points east and Exit 16 for all destinations west.
