Malden’s ace Amos no-hits Cambridge

All-Scholastic pitcher Kiara Amos threw her second no-hitter of the season and was an infield error away from recording a perfect game as the No. 5 ranked Malden girls dominated Greater Boston League rival, Cambridge, 12-0, Friday at Callahan Park, in Malden.

Amos (12-0) earned her 64th career win, a school record, and recorded her 10th career shutout and her seventh of the season.

The Providence-bound hurler had 14 strikeouts, and averages 13 per game.

“Kiara is a competitor when she gets on the mound. She is there for one reason and that is to win,’’ said Malden coach John Furlong. “She has really great control of her pitches. She can throw inside and outside the plate. She throws a great curveball.’’

The All-Star pitcher won 16 games as a sophomore and 18 as a junior. Senior Emily Hoffman, who has been catching for Amos since they were both 10 years old, also contributes to Amos’s success.

“Emily has caught her for the last nine years. They have just been together for so long that they are just like yin and yang and they know how to call games and it makes my life a little easier,’’ said Furlong.

Hoffman finished 3 for 4 and drilled a long double to right center field in the fourth inning to knock in two runs for the Tornadoes’ 11-0 lead.

Senior shortstop Rebecca Krigman, who is hitting over .500 this season, had three hits, including a double and two RBIs. Junior second basemen Bridget Furlong (1 for 1), who entered the game hitting .571, drilled a double down the right field line to drive in three runs in the third inning.

Malden (11-1, 6-0) looks to face off against Greater Boston League rival Everett Tuesday.
