Clear Channel reaches deal to buy 101.7 WFNX

Clear Channel Communications has reached a deal to buy rock music station 101.7 FM WFNX from the Boston-based Phoenix Media/Communications Group for an undisclosed amount.

Nearly every staff member lost their jobs at the Lynn radio station because of the pending transition: The Boston Business Journal reported that only four of 21 staffers remain.

It’s unclear what kind of format the station will have once Clear Channel completes the acquisition – which needs to be approved by the Federal Communications Commission – although it seems unlikely the rock format will remain once it is under Clear Channel’s ownership.

San Antonio-based Clear Channel already owns four stations in Greater Boston, including WXKS-FM, WJMN-FM, WXKS-AM and WKOX-AM.
