Two very worthwhile benefit events this weekend, as Haymakers for Hope at The House of Blues in Boston raises money for Dana Farber’s cancer research on Thursday, while Saturday, Jammin’ for Julian seeks to raise funds and awareness for a Cape Cod boy.
Haymakers for Hope Rock ‘n’ Rumble has become an annual event, where complete boxing novices, most without any amateur experience at all, enter the ring to raise money for Dana Farber’s cancer research programs. This year’s edition is at the House of Blues in Boston, and the best known would-be pugilist is former Patriots offensive tackle Max Lane.
Local people slated to go into the squared circle Thursday night include Braintree’s Matt Crane, Brian Higgins of Milton, Chris McGuirk from Norwell, and Plymouth’s Mike Connolly. Tickets for the Haymakers for Hope start at $75, and there are VIP and full table packages available.
Saturday the Improper Bostonian in Dennisport devotes the whole day, 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. to Jammin’ for Julian, seeking to raise funds for the family of young Julian Gabriel, who is being treated for leukemia. There is also going to be a donor awareness aspect to this event, as Julian needs a bone marrow transplant, and testing for prospective matches is very easy.
Some of the bands and performers scheduled to take the stage at the Improper Bostonian include Shango Axe, Funktapuss, Highly Suspect, and Brendan Princi. There will also be added features like face-painting for kids, and dance lessons. Saturday’s event requests a $15 donation, with $5 for kids, and more information can be found at www.jamminforjulian.blogspot.com
