Public meeting set for Huntington Y demolition, addition plans

A public meeting has been scheduled to review the the Huntington Avenue YMCA’s plans to demolish its pool and squash courts and build new facilities.

The meeting, part of the public review process, is set for Wednesday, May 30 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Y’s Bates Hall.

The Greater Boston YMCA plans to demolish its pool and courts and build an addition to house modern basketball and handball courts, and lap and therapy pools. The Y would also move the weight room and exercise equipment to the second floor of the main building while the corporate offices housed there now would be moved to the top floor of the new addition along with other renovations.

The new addition would accommodate the loss of the gym building, which the Y has sold to Phoenix Property Co. The company plans to build a $75 million, 17-story dormitory for Northeastern University in its place.

Y members and some neighborhood residents have long opposed the the dormitory plan and have opposed the renovations, saying they do not fit the needs of members. Others have seen the dorm as a way of keeping undergraduates from moving off campus.

Y officials have stressed that this project is being considered by the city separately from the dorm project, which has already been approved by the Boston Redevelopment Authority.
