Unions plan State House rally over Pilgrim plant

Members of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO, Greater Boston Labor Council, and Plymouth-Bristol Central Labor Council, as well as state officials will join the Utility Workers Union of America Local 369 for a rally outside the State House next week to protest Louisiana-based Entergy Corp.’s ongoing worker lockout at Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant.

Among those expected to attend are state AFL-CIO President Steven Tolman, Senate President Therese Murray, Rep. Martin Walsh, state Treasurer Steven Grossman, and representatives from other unions.

The union has spent nearly two months negotiating with Entergy over health care, safety and staffing issues. Entergy recently received a license renewal allowing the company to operate Pilgrim Nuclear for 20 more years.

Earlier this month workers were escorted out of the plant by Entergy officials after contract discussions collapsed for the second time since May 15. Local 369 has 380 members — 90 percent of the plant’s work force — currently working at Pilgrim.
