While Massachusetts boosters and politicians can be excused for expressing delight with Thursday’s jobs number (6.0 percent unemployment statewide), job growth in Boston is lagging the city’s peers nationwide.

Total employment in Greater Boston rose 0.9 percent from April 2011 to April 2012 – less than the national growth rate of 1.3 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics

. Among the largest U.S. metros, seven of 12 saw better job growth than Boston’s.

The lone bright spot is Boston’s IT sector, which grew by 2.5 percent in the Boston area while falling 1.6 percent nationwide.
