Boston leads Global Talent Index commissioned by Chamber

Boston ranks the first in a new Global Talent Index (GTI), outperforming all other 30 metropolitan areas domestically and internationally in their capacity to produce, attract and retain talent, according to the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce.

The Global Talent Index ranks 15 regions in the U.S. and 15 around the world by assessing the quality of universities, the education level of residents and the production of patents for each region.

Boston ranked second to London in the university academic performance metric and fifth in the college degree metric, in with Oslo ranked first.

In the patent metric, Beijing ranks first and Boston ranks fourth. Boston’s score was due in part to the more than 70 universities in the area.

“ Our economy increasingly will be knowledge-based and therefore talent is critical for economy growth,” said Paul Guzzi, CEO of the Chamber. “We can do better to improve the global competitiveness of this region.”

To help strengthen Boston’s performance, the Chamber made three policy recommendations during a briefing for reportrers:
• Have the state match up to $50 million in university based research and development work.

• Change visa regulations to make it easier for highly educated non-citizens to work in the United States.

• Make sure Boston gest one of three new satellite patent offices the federal government will create.

The Chamber of Commerce firstly created the GTI with assistance by PricewaterhouseCoopers and Bentley University. Data for the U.S. regions was selected on the basis of population, while international regions were selected by the global economic prominence.
