Biotechnology field is hot locally, nationally, and internationally

Representatives from all over New England, the United States, and the world gathered for the BIO National Convention (known as BIO 2012) at the Boston Convention Center June 20 in Boston. While Women in BIO was recruiting members for their new Greater Boston Chapter, representatives from New Hampshire, Midwestern states such as South Dakota and Minnesota, as well as countries such as India, Russia, Japan and Thailand discussed local biotechnology efforts and worked to recruit partners for projects.

At the New Hampshire booth on the exhibition floor, breathtaking landscapes lured visitors to learn information about the benefits of locating a biotechnology business in New Hampshire. Matthew Grasberger, Senior Sales Representative from VWR International’s office in Franklin, MA, described the joy of working in his home office in a rural town in New Hampshire, which is about 90 minutes from Boston by car. When things get stressful, he only has to go outside to enjoy a walk in the scenery.

Midwestern states, such as Minnesota and South Dakota, had large exhibitions on the floor of BIO 2012. However, these were dwarfed by entire sections devoted to the biotechnology industry in other countries, such as India, Russia, Japan, and Thailand. India’s presence in the biotechnology industry is so large that the next international BIO conference is being held in Mumbai September 12-13, 2012.

International companies in the biotechnology field, such as Merck, courted partners from every corner of the world including Boston at BIO 2012. But Boston remains bio-technologically competitive, evidenced by the fact that Merck is based in Boston and maintains a strong local presence with its building on Avenue Louis Pasteur.
