Much of eastern Massachusetts is under a National Weather Service heat advisory from 1 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, with temperatures expected in the mid-90s.
“There’s a very warm air mass in place and we’re expecting temps for many parts of the area to reach into the mid- and upper-90s,” Matthew Doody, a NWS meteorologist in Taunton, told our Newscast unit early Tuesday.
With humidity, the heat index could reach 102 degrees, which, according to the advisory, “will result in dangerous conditions for those spending prolonged periods of time outdoors.”
In Boston, the July 17 record of 98 degrees could be broken, and Mayor Thomas Menino has issued his own heat advisory.
Menino and other public safety officials are asking residents to take precautions, like limiting outdoor activity and staying hydrated.
“During hot weather, it’s important to stay cool and hydrated, and to keep an eye on our vulnerable neighbors,” Menino said in the advisory.
The weather service has also issued an air quality alert for southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the Islands. Temperatures on the Cape will be in the mid- to upper-80s.
Wednesday’s high temperature is forecast to be near 90.
