BOSTON — Severe thunderstorms that could bring heavy rain, wind and hail are moving across Massachusetts.
The National Weather Service has lifted all of its severe weather warnings, but thunderstorm watches remain in effect for a few more hours.
Essex and Suffolk counties were briefly under a tornado warning just after 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Meteorologist Mark Rosenthal says the storms could continue into the evening.
“We have a severe thunderstorm watch in effect for much of Massachusetts until 9:30 [Wednesday],” he said. “That means the conditions and the atmosphere are favorable for the formation of severe weather.”
In Lynn, police lieutenant Christopher Kelly says the heavy weather came really quickly.
“We had very large hail, a lot of lightning,” Kelly said. “When the storm passed over it was dark as night, now it’s still raining but it’s back to being light and you can see the sun through the clouds at this point.”
There were also scattered reports of fires in Lynn, started by lightning strikes.
Lynn responders are checking on a lightning strikes and trees and branches knocked down and some reports of downed wires. At the same time, there’s flash flood warning in effect for that area.
