The YMCA of Greater Boston and Northeastern University have inked a $21.5 million real estate deal that represents a step forward for the Y’s plans to renovate its flagship Huntington Ave. facility, and the university’s plans to build a new, 17-story dorm.

Preparations are set to begin this week for construction on Northeastern’s planned $100 million GrandMarc dormitory, which is set to house 720 beds. The project was initially scheduled for completion next summer, but construction is now expected to last well into 2014, the Boston Herald reports.

Neighbors and YMCA members have opposed the project, according to the Herald, but the Boston Redevelopment Authority recently approved it.

The Y will remain open during construction, but members will have to use gym and pool facilities at other YMCA Boston locations. Proceeds from the property sale are set to fund a planned renovated gym and aquatics center.
