Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has signed on to support HomeStart Inc., a nonprofit with the mission of preventing and ending homelessness in Greater Boston, the organization said on Friday.

“Salty,” who has played with the Red Sox since 2010, will help HomeStart through event appearances and by acting as a spokesman about the issue of preventing homelessness in a video on HomeStart’s website.

“We are honored to have Jarrod Saltalamacchia on our side. Just like Salty protects home plate, HomeStart protects homes for those at risk of losing housing. We also place homeless families and individuals into permanent housing to help them lead stable lives,” said Linda Wood-Boyle, President and CEO of HomeStart, in a news release.
