The Improper Bostonian is fun and quirky

They had me at the lobster-shaped Adirondack chairs. Or maybe it was the totally random bathtub in the corner, guarded over quasi-menacingly by a bouncer, or the marked-up bar (complete with several dozen proclamations of highly questionable love featuring even more questionable grammar).

Bottom line is, The Improper Bostonian in Dennisport is darn fun, darn quirky and definitely a place I plan to hit a few more times before the sweet strains of summer fade away entirely.

One of my ultimate pet peeves when it comes to bands playing at Cape Cod bars is that they, well, forget they’re playing at Cape Cod bars, trading tried-and-true pop and rock for obscure B-sides, slow and boring ballads or early ’90s grunge (which, don’t get me wrong, has its place. But that place isn’t a dance floor). Shiver.

Neither Highly Suspect nor Freeballin — which played the nights I was at the Improper Bostonian this summer — fell into that too-cool-for-the-room trap. Both played a solid repertoire of mostly covers that were danceable and sing-able by a crowd happy to look silly or sound off-key in the name of having fun.

Sure, some of the dance moves were a bit lame (sorry, lame dancers). But it wasn’t the fault of the band. I may not be the biggest fan of the Black Eyed Peas, but when “I Gotta Feeling” is sandwiched with ’80s fave “Take Me Home Tonight” and Cee Lo Green’s unpublishably named ode to a gold-digging lady (radio-edited as “Forget You”), I’ll dance along like an idiot with the rest of ’em.

Good show, Improper. Good show.
