Countdown to hospice fund-raising walk in Danvers starts Aug. 29

The countdown for the 25th annual Walk for Hospice of the North Shore Greater Boston will begin on Aug. 29, with a party in Danvers honoring local residents who have served as co-chairs of the three-mile fund-raising trek.

“Celebrating 25” will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Danversport Yacht Club. The cost is $40 per person. Hor d’ouvres, raffle prizes and a silent auction are planned. Proceeds will benefit hospice, a nonprofit that provides end-of-life care for terminally people and their families. It also operates Kaplan Family Hospice House, a 20- bed facility on Liberty Street in Danvers.

This year’s walk-a-thon will be held on Sept. 23 at 9 a.m. at St. John’s Preparatory School.

Tom Gould of Peabody, owner of Treadwell’s Ice Cream and a city councilor, and Ronna Thur Winer, a Danvers resident and long-time walk participant, are this year’s co-chairs. Since 1992, the walk has been led by co-chairs, who help to rally volunteers, walk teams, and corporate sponsors to support hospice.

“This is a wonderful opportunity, not only for family and friends to honor their loved ones, but also to thank hospice for being there when they most needed it,” Nancy Palmer of Danvers, the co-chair in 2009 and 2010, said in a statement. “The walk affirms for me the tremendous difference that (hospice) makes in the lives of families in our communities, when they are most vulnerable.”

Although based in Danvers, hospice’s service area is Greater Boston, and the organization has a second office in Wellesley.
