Lynn Woods relay encourages team spirit

LYNN — The runners turned out in droves Wednesday night for the 44th annual Lynn Woods 10-Mile Relay and for the second year in a row, Greater Boston Track Club can claim both the men’s and women’s overall titles.

Lynn Woods race organizer Bill Mullen said everything went smoothly despite the fact that with 95 four-person teams, there were nearly 400 runners competing in 11 divisions.

Of the 95 teams, 94 finished. The race was 10 miles with each runner doing a 2.5-mile leg.

“It was a great night. I think folks had a good time,” Mullen said.

Alex Gomes, who had a stellar running career at Salem State, said the Lynn Woods course is one of the toughest courses around and is considered one of the top five in New England. Gomes was on the winning men’s team, Greater Boston Trail Club, that also included Caleb Evanter of Marblehead, Jason Garrity of Topsfield and Mathew Weissinger of Norwell. Their combined total was 56:05.

The winning women’s team, GBTC Victoria Her Allisons, was comprised of Allison Lynch of Beverly, Victoria Barnaby of East Boston and Allison McCabe and Aly Millett of Charlestown. Their combined total was 1:04:55 (7th overall).

There were teams from throughout the Boston area, some representing running clubs, some who just teamed up with friends and some who used the relay to tune up for the high school relay team.

St. Mary’s sent two relay teams and English, although down in numbers, had a team comprised of three runners, Ri Yan, Tyler Comer and Johnathan Nop, who will be on the school’s cross country team this fall. The fourth member of the team, Joseph Gay, graduated this year and will attend Wentworth Institute of Technology in the fall.

“This is good practice,” Yan said, “and everyone shows really good sportsmanship.”

Nop said it’s great to be out there running with people rather than training by yourself and Yan said the race is a good source of motivation to get ready for the season.
