Menino sidesteps opportunity to endorse Warren

Will he or won’t he?

The biggest question in Bay State politics remains unanswered — despite a perfect setting to clear the matter up.

Hub Mayor Thomas M. Menino had yet another wonderful opportunity to endorse Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren at this morning’s Greater Boston Labor Council breakfast, but Boston’s longest-serving boss demurred, instead focusing on the election in general and jabbing at national Republicans.

Menino, who like Warren and many other Bay State Democrats will speak at this week’s national convention in Charlotte, N.C., called the upcoming election “the most important we’ve had in a long time.”

“It’s about the future of America,” Menino told the pro-labor crowd. “It’s not about the personalities. It’s about how they’re going to vote. They’re going to vote for you, not corporate America.”

Menino also took a jab at the Republican National Convention, saying, “Wasn’t there great diversity there?”

And he noted that Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney signed a universal health-care bill when he was governor of Massachusetts, but now opposes the national health reform bill President Obama signed.

“I guess there’s a time lapse in his brain,” Menino quipped.

So far, Menino has remained on the sidelines of the Bay State’s contentious and closely watched Senate race, which pits Warren against GOP Sen. Scott Brown.

Despite Massachusetts’ blue-state leanings, Brown has managed to hold his own in polls.

Menino is likely waiting to endorse Warren until the nod will have its maximum effect. But if he sits out the Senate race, it could be a serious blow to Warren and a huge boost for Brown.
