NORTON – As if town meeting isn’t enough, the town just tiptoed onto the world stage.

And so, the United Nations can take a flying leap into Norton Reservoir – as far as selectmen are concerned.

Selectmen voted 4-0 Thursday night, with Bob Salvo absent from the meeting, not to support the United Nations Association of Greater Boston in recognizing United Nations Day on Oct. 24.

The vote came after Chairman Tim Giblin read a proclamation sent by the organization to the board and made a motion to accept the proclomation.

Bob Kimball, describing himself as in “the minority,” said he didn’t believe the UN was doing its job.

But, it turned out Kimball wasn’t alone. Giblin and Selectman Brad Branwell agreed.

Kimball said that the organization was great following World War II, but that has changed as time marched on.

The UN replaced the League of Nations in 1945 after World War II.

“It certainly had a concept and had a goal, but I think it has dwindled,” Giblin said.

Selectwoman Mary Steele said she didn’t really have an opinion and suggested the board reconsider the motion to accept the proclamation.
