An 18-year-old man was arrested at his parents’ home Thursday night in connection with the stabbing of a jogger in Rossmoor.
James Anthony Rivas was arrested at about 7 p.m. Thursday, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. He was booked on $500,000 bail.
A court appearance was scheduled for Monday, according to jail records.
“Someone had a tip, and we’ve fielded several tips in the last couple days,” said Lt. Mike Gavin, of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. “A lot of things added up.”
A bicycle and knife were recovered at the home, deputies said. The attacker was riding a bicycle, according to investigators.
There was a brief foot pursuit before the man was arrested, Gavin said.
The female jogger was grabbed from behind and stabbed three times Tuesday night in the 3200 block of Bostonian Drive, investigators said. The woman was stabbed in the face, an arm and hand, but knocked the knife from the attacker’s hand, according to the sheriff’s department.
She was released from the hospital Wednesday.
Authorities have not determined a motive for the attack.
“We haven’t been able to determine if it was for sexual reasons or for robbery reasons — no words were exchanged,” said Gavin. “Whatever his motives might have been, it ended quickly.”
