Police arrest suspect in stabbing of jogger in Rossmoor

Police say that an 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the brutal stabbing of a female jogger in Rossmoor.

The suspect, James Rivas, was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, according to police.

Rivas, who just graduated from Los Alamitos High School last year, lives with his parents and siblings in Rossmoor.

Detectives spent the night Thursday digging through their garage, removing several paper bags full of evidence.

People who live in the area attended a community meeting on Thursday with law enforcement.

Deputies told KTLA that they made the arrest after talking to a resident.

“We got some information from one of the residents that we were able to connect with information we had, which led us to where we are right now,” said Orange County sheriff’s Lt. Mike Gavin.

The attack occurred shortly after 9 p.m. on Tuesday as a 28-year-old woman was jogging in the 3200 block of Bostonian Drive.

Police say that Rivas grabbed the woman from behind and then attacked her with a knife.

She was able to fight him off and knock the knife down, but the suspect chased her down and continued the attack.

A nearby resident heard the woman’s screams and yelled at the suspect. Rivas then sped away on a BMX bicycle, according to police.

“She received a stab wound to her back. She had a stab wound through-and-through her left tricep and also a cut on her left hand… [and] multiple slice marks to her face,” Gavin said.

The victim was hospitalized for treatment of what were described as non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators do not know what motivated the attack. Gavin said there was no attempt to rob or sexually assault the jogger.
