On Tuesday, October 23 at approximately 9 p.m., a 28-year-old female resident of Rossmoor was savagely attacked at knifepoint. A team of investigators from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department responded on the night of the attack. On Wednesday and Thursday investigators canvassed the Rossmoor neighborhood for clues. Investigators interviewed numerous residents as well as employees of the nearby businesses.

On Thursday, October 24 at approximately 4 p.m. a lead was generated from one of these interviews. This lead enabled investigators to identify suspect, James Rivas, 18 years old, of Rossmoor. Rivas fit the suspect description and was known to ride a BMX bike and carry knives. Rivas’ house is located three blocks from the assault.

Deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department conducted a surveillance of his residence. At approximately 8 p.m., Rivas was seen leaving his residence. Deputies identified themselves and a short foot pursuit ensued before Rivas was taken into custody. A knife was recovered nearby and was taken as evidence. A search of Rivas’ residence was conducted and items recovered will be analyzed by the Orange County Crime Lab. Investigators interviewed Rivas and based on the cumulative evidence he was booked into Orange County Jail for attempted murder.
