While construction workers packed job sites in Boston and Cambridge over the last year, Springfield, Mass. had the biggest decline in trade employment of any metro region in the U.S., according to federal data released Tuesday by the Associated General Contractors of America.

For the one year period that ended on September 30, Greater Springfield saw construction jobs fall to 7,800, down from 10,400 — a 25 percent loss. The Worcester area experienced a loss of 600 trade jobs, a 7 percent decrease, while Leominster saw a total loss of 100 jobs or a 6 percent dip.

The Bay State saw construction jobs fall by one percent over the 12 month period, to 111,600 from a total of 113,200 jobs for the previous year — a loss of 1,600 jobs.
