BOSTON (AP) — Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington says he has a role waiting for retired pitcher Pedro Martinez, if he wants it. Cherington says he’s had discussions with Martinez about rejoining the Sox as an instructor. Martinez was in town on Saturday at the Greater Boston Sports Collectors Club convention.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Ohio State forward taken in the first round of the draft, made his first NBA start on Saturday. Jared Sullinger replaced Brandon Bass in Boston’s lineup. Sullinger ended up with four points and four fouls in the Celtics 89-86 victory over the Washington Wizards. The teams play each other again on Wednesday in Boston.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Shabazz Napier scored 22 points and Connecticut concluded its preseason with a 100-62 rout over UMass-Lowell yesterday. Deandre Daniels had 15 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks for the Huskies. Freshman Omar Calhoun added 20 points. Akeem Williams scored 19 points for the River Hawks and Antonio Bivins had 16 points.

CHESTNUTT HILL, Mass. (AP) — The Boston College men’s hockey team beat the University of Massachusetts 3-2 yesterday. The Eagles are now 6-1. They return to action on Friday when they host the University of Notre Dame.

ORONO, Maine (AP) — The University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team beat the University of Maine 4-0 yesterday. Austin Block scored a pair of goals and Casey DeSmith stopped 42 shots to help with the win. UNH improved to 5-1-1 overall and Maine is now 1-8-0.
