The man who launched a gourmet coffee revolution in Greater Boston with the Coffee Connection in the 1970s is brewing a comeback.

George Howell, who later sold his two-dozen cafes to Seattle-based Starbucks Corp. (Nasdaq: SBUX), has opened George Howell Coffee, a 700-square-foot cafe in Newtonville around the corner from a Starbucks shop and across the street from the Bread Chocolate Bakery Cafe. But this is just the start. The 68-year-old coffee connoisseur is looking for a flagship space in downtown Boston, Cambridge or Somerville.
