Although spring officially begins Wednesday, it will be arriving on the heels of yet another winter walloping, with forecasters predicting up to 7 inches of snow in Boston tonight.
“Oh boy, it’s coming,” said Eleanor Vallier-Talbot of the National Weather Service. “Snow, sleet and freezing rain, all coming our way.”
The greater Boston area can expect 4 to 7 inches of snow late tonight, according to the National Weather Service. A winter storm remains in effect tonight into tomorrow morning.
“It looks like its going to be a nasty morning commute” tomorrow, Vallier-Talbot said. “It will not be pleasant.”
The storm is coming in from the Ohio Valley and the mid-Atlantic region. Forecasters said it’s moving northeast, right along the New England coast, grazing New Jersey and Cape Cod.
“As you go toward the east side of Boston you’ll see less snow, 4 inches,” forecaster Frank Nocera said. “The west side of town will see more, about 7 inches.”
Temperatures will be colder than normal for a mid-March day — lower- to mid-30s. However, tomorrow, the air will be warmer, in the low to mid-40s.
“That’s about 10-15 degrees cooler than the norm,” Vallier-Talbot said. “We should be much warmer. These numbers reflect January weather.”
Moving west of Boston toward Worcester, 5 to 9 inches of snow is predicted, officials say. Temperatures will reach a high of 34, staying that way into Thursday. Cape Cod will see 1 to 3 inches.
Forecasters said although a storm in mid-March is not unusual, it is still uncommon.
“In 1997, we had the famous April Fools’ Day snowstorm,” Vallier-Talbot said. “And that day, we got 2 feet.”
