STONEHAM – Since its inception in 1897, the Boston Marathon has become more than just a race. The 26.2 mile run is not just an opportunity for individuals to reach personal goals or a day to celebrate the Greater Boston community. For some, it means much more.
Stoneham Theatre began participating in the Boston Marathon four years ago in memory of Producing Artistic Director Weylin Symes’ twin brother, Gavin.
“I ran my first Marathon in 2010, less than a year after Gavin’s death,” Symes shared. “It played a huge role in helping me feel that I could keep living my life, even as I grieved for him and worried for my own health.”
As part of their Marathon sponsorship each year, John Hancock provides local non-profit organizations with guaranteed entries into the race, which can help create a significant fundraising opportunity as well as great exposure for a non-profit cause. Since Symes’ first race in 2010, Team Stoneham Theatre has honored Gavin’s memory by running the Marathon while raising money for Stoneham Theatre.
Although Symes will not be running this year, his team is made up of members of the extended Stoneham Theatre family: Team Captain Bradley Jensen, Shonna Cirone, and Kristin McNelis. Jensen not only teaches in the young company program, after graduating from the program himself, but he is also a cast member of the upcoming Thoroughly Modern Millie, which opens immediately following the Marathon on April 18th. Singer and actress Shonna Cirone was seen on Stoneham’s stage last season in the ensemble of The Full Monty. Kristin McNelis grew up seeing her older sister Kiera on Stoneham Theatre’s stage and loves the access that Stoneham Theatre and the young company give to children. McNelis’ mother, Beth, is also a member of the Theatre’s Board of Trustees.
Team Stoneham Theatre’s goal is to raise $20,000 to support the 501(c)3 non-profit professional theatre. Donations of all amounts are appreciated, and donors of $100 or more are invited to join Stoneham Theatre for a special thank-you event before the final dress rehearsal of Thoroughly Modern Millie.
