LOCAL STARTUP ACQUISITIONS

Location: Marlborough
Acquired by: IBM
September, 2010

Terms: About $1.7 billion

“Netezza will expand IBM’s business analytics initiatives to help clients gain faster insights into their business information, with increased performance at a lower cost,” IBM said in a statement.

Founded in 2000 as Intelligent Data Engines Inc., Netezza went public in 2007 and had clients from Estee Lauder, Marriott, NYSE Euronext and Virgin Media, the Wall Street Journal reported at the time of the acquisition.

The company “provided software and servers– those giant black things crammed in a loud, cold room at your workplace — to crunch numbers on how and why cell phone subscribers shut off their service, who is looking at ads on an online-video website, and how retailers should best manage their maze of suppliers,” the journal reported.
