How to get property back from scene of Boston Marathon bombings

The Boston Police Department is in possession of property of individuals who were at the scene of the Marathon bombings. This property has been reviewed by investigators, and determined to have no evidentiary value, and therefore may be returned to owners. There are three ways by which individuals may inquire about their property:

  • Via email at lostproperty.bpd@cityofboston.gov
  • By calling the Mayor’s Hotline at 617-635-4500
  • By visiting the Return of Property Center at Boston Police Department Headquarters in the Media Room 8 a.m. to 8 p.m from Tuesday, April 23 to Friday, April 26.

Return of Items

BPD detectives will deliver items to owners in the greater Boston area.  If owners are located in Massachusetts, but outside of the greater Boston area, BPD will coordinate with those police departments to facilitate delivery of lost items.

Visit to Boston Police Headquarters

Should individuals choose to visit HQ from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for their belongings; the following will be in place:

  • Parking will be available to property owners in the horseshoe at HQ and on Tremont Street
  • Two Community Service Officers will be assigned to greet property owners
  • Support Services will be available from the BPHC, FBI, and BPD
  • Officers will be available to take information, and retrieve property on site if the property is in the BPD’s possession
  • Officers will be available to take lost property reports if the BPD does not have the property, or if there is property missing when it is returned to the owner.
