The Big Sister Association was founded in 1951 by three Cambridge residents. The group pairs girls (Little Sisters) with volunteers (Big Sisters) for one-on-one mentoring.

In 1952, the program was incorporated as The Big Sister Association of Greater Boston. In its first year, the group matched six girls with mentors.
