28 Startups Sprung from Greater Boston’s Schools into MassChallenge’s …

New England was named the worst in the nation for retaining college graduates this week. With that bad news reiterated, however, there is a promising positive: MassChallenge has done its part to help. Out of the 128 companies participating in its summer accelerator program, dozens come from Greater Boston’s colleges and universities.

Babson College was actually granted the incubator’s “Trendspotter of the Year” award for having referred the most applicants of anyone to the 2013 accelerator. Twelve Babson startups applied, and five were chosen to advance as finalists.

Over the last three years, however, 33 Babson-related teams have been crowned finalists, according to a press release, farther furthering the reason for the accolades.

Babson isn’t the only school with a strong showing, however. Below are 28 teams with ties to the city’s colleges, many of which have already won competitions.

Grand prize winner of the 2013 MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition was MassChallenge finalist 3dim, a patent-pending 3D gesture sensor for the battery-powered mobile device market. With 3dim, users can gesture in 3D to their phone, tablet or wearables, all without having to touch a screen.

Fellow finalist Tauros Engineering, a company currently commercializing a technology designed to detect bridge scour, also walked away the winner of a $50,000 first-place prize, as well as the $2,000 crowd favorite award, in Harvard Business School’s newly-named New Venture Competition.

For a look at some of the other schools represented, including Boston University, Northeastern and Tufts, check out the slideshow below.
