‘Greater Boston’ Examines Whitey Bulger Saga

Two FBI handout photos of mobster James Whitey Bulger taken in the 1980s.

As opening statements get underway in the James “Whitey” Bulger trial Wednesday, Emily Rooney examines the decades long saga of Boston’s most notorious gangster on Greater Boston.

For the families and victims of Bulger’s decades-long criminal spree the trial is a moment in justice long overdue. Tonight, Greater Boston takes you through Bulger’s criminal enterprise – a record that spans some 70-years, but began in earnest in the 1960’s.

The feature will excerpt the 2001 documentary, The Outlaw and the Lawman; interviews Emily has conducted with some well-known Whitey associates,  Kevin Weeks and John “RED” Shea; an interview with Lindsey Cyr, the mother of Whitey’s only known child who died at the age of 6; and a sit down with then FBI agent John Connolly, who is now serving a 40-year sentence for murder.
