Todd English’s Charlestown Olives closed again?

Olives Charlestown could be officially closed. According to an article posted by Boston.com, Andrew Flatley, an observer in the area, send a tweet saying “Olives in Charlestown closed ‘until further notice.’ Notices in windows direct inquiries to building owner.”

The information has not been confirmed, but this is not the first time that a restaurant owned by celebrity chef Todd English has faced problems.

On May 2016, Faneuil Hall landlord General Growth sued English for over $1 million in unpaid rent for his Kingfish Hall restaurant. Last September, Carey Realty and City Square Holdings, English’s landlords at Olives, filed a rent claim in Suffolk Superior Court, this time for $723,000 of unpaid rent for the Charlestown property.

By May this year, English was refinancing his culinary properties in order to pay the debts from his Faneuil Hall restaurant and avoid losing a liquor license that could worth $450,000.

A spokeswoman for Todd English Enterprises issued the following statement:

Chef Todd English Announces the Relocation and Evolution of Olives Charlestown

For years a favorite destination among locals and visitors alike, the beloved restaurant will be relocating to the Greater Boston area as it also looks forward to its evolution and reinvention.

Boston, June 28, 2013 — Todd English announced today the relocation of his signature Charlestown restaurant, Olives. The landmark establishment that opened its doors in 1989 on Main Street, and moved to City Square three years later, is once again moving to a new location in the greater Boston area.

“Charlestown is and will always have a special place in my heart. It is with sadness that I will be leaving this neighborhood. We have been here since 1989 and so many wonderful memories are tied to this place,” says Todd English. “But with the incredible way America’s culinary landscape has been evolving, I have decided that Olives – my first and signature restaurant – must also evolve.”
