The state Senate passed a bill setting up a commission to study the feasibility of hosting the summer Olympics in 2024 in Boston.

Sen. Eileen Donoghue, D-Lowell, sponsored the bill. “I filed this to study the possibility of hosting the summer Olympics not just in Boston but Greater Boston and around New England,” she said during Tuesday’s Senate session, according to State House News Service. “The commission would analyze all aspects from infrastructure to jobs. Hosting the Olympics could be a very rewarding opportunity and deserves exploration.”

According to Donoghue, a Boston olympics could “rejuvenate our great Commonwealth.” She cited the Boston Marathon bombing attacks and said she believes Massachusetts should “show the world how proud we are.”

The “national profile” from a Boston Olympics “could keep people investing and visiting our state long after the Olympics.”

Sen. Robert Hedlund, R-Weymouth, asked about the cost of submitting a bid. Donoghue said the bill isn’t to support a bid, but to establish a commission to study its feasibility.

The bill passed by a roll call vote of 38 to 1, according to SHNS. It now goes to the state House of Representatives.
