Primrose Schools, a nationally accredited private preschool franchise, is expanding into New England with plans to open 10 schools in the next three years.

“There is a great interest in early childhood education in the Boston area,” said Cory Durden, director of franchise development for the Atlanta-based company. “We’ve identified several markets where there’s demand for the kind of early foundation we provide young children and it’s something parents want.”

Founded in 1982, Primrose operates 270 schools in 21 states. They are building the first Bay State school in Burlington, Mass. The $4.2 million school is scheduled to open next year. Each 14,000-square-foot school serves about 190 students from six weeks to 6 years old. As many as 30 employees staff each facility. Each Primrose is independently owned and operated by a franchisee. Tuition is $400 per week.

Durden said they expect to start construction later this year in Natick and are scouting real estate opportunities in Arlington, Newton, Needham, Wayland and Andover.

“The western suburbs are a target for us,” he added.

The school will face competition form a variety of child care providers including KinderCare, Bright Horizons, Goddard School and others.
